Why is it so hard to know the quality of healthcare we receive?

Patients lack data because they are not the customer.

We rate Uber drivers, restaurants, and Amazon delivery, but when it comes to our own health experience, we have little to no data. The reason is structural: the business model of the healthcare provider is to get money from the insurance company, not the patient. The patient is not the customer. Because of this misalignment, knowing quality is of utmost importance, yet the information is not readily available to us as patients.
