Media’s unbundling foreshadows what’s happening to retail today.

When HTML and social media transformed media, homepages lost their power. Readers no longer started on whatevernews.com but landed on single articles via Facebook, Twitter, or Google. The article became the atomic unit of value while media brands receded. Many scaled down, and only top outlets like The New York Times or The Economist built new businesses. The winners were creators and journalists on platforms like Substack and Medium. Retail is now entering the same cycle of disruption as AI becomes the new interface for shopping.
