I experimented with cold-calling via a random number generator, multiple-choice questionnaires, discussions in smaller groups, and other methods. After surveying students after each class, multiple-choice questionnaires came out on top. I created them for every 10 minutes of my course to ensure my speed was right and measure my teaching performance. I also used a Google Spreadsheet where students outlined answers in one to two sentences, then picked the most interesting ones to discuss.
