Question 1

Can AI transcription tools introduce bias based on employee names?

Accepted Answer

_Meeting transcription and AI-driven contribution tracking may disadvantage non-Western names._

> Tools like Granola, Read.ai, Fireflies, and Avoma now routinely track talk time and participation, and firms like Amazon and Meta are folding AI-surfaced contribution into how they review people.

Question 2

How did racial bias in a healthcare algorithm affect Black patients according to the Science study?

Accepted Answer

_Training data bias reduced Black patient care identification by half._

A study published in Science revealed that a healthcare algorithm showed racial bias in patient care. Specifically, Black patients who were assigned the same risk level as White patients were actually sicker. This bias had serious consequences, reducing the number of Black patients identified for extra care by more than half. The study points to initial training data as often being the culprit for such algorithmic bias, demonstrating how AI systems can perpetuate inequities in critical areas like healthcare.

Question 3

How did the Apple Card algorithm discriminate despite not using gender as a direct feature?

Accepted Answer

_Apple Card offered vastly different limits to spouses with identical assets._

David Heinemeier Hansson was offered a credit limit 20 times higher than his wife despite having the same shared assets. The algorithm likely learned from a world where men earn on average more than women and concluded that men are more creditworthy. This shows how bias creeps in even when protected characteristics like gender aren't direct features. The training data itself was biased, reflecting existing societal inequalities, and the algorithm learned to perpetuate them without explicitly considering gender.

Question 4

How did you solve the fairness problem in peer reviews for your Cornell data products course?

Accepted Answer

_Statistical personas identify unfair reviewers in peer grading systems._

We developed a data validation process to ensure fairness in peer reviews. The process analyzes metrics like total review time, time spent on each review, and number of comments left on each project. Most variables followed a Gaussian distribution, letting us use statistical tools to identify problematic reviewers. We built student personas including Lazy Graders, Harsh and Happy Graders, and Misaligned Students. Examining just three to four projects from a single student typically gave us enough insight to determine if they fit these personas, and we would re-evaluate their feedback accordingly.

Question 5

How do biases in narrow AI systems create real-world harm?

Accepted Answer

_AI systems enforce human prejudices at massive scale._

Narrow AI amplifies existing biases at scale. In parole decisions, computers were meant to remove human bias, but when fed biased data, they kept more minorities in jail. Loan application systems with few women in training data couldn't correctly handle female applicants. The stop and frisk program in New York used a computer to select precincts, but it was racially unjust. When you remove skin color from the data, the system became even more skewed. There's a logical data science explanation for this.

Question 6

How do existing laws already address AI concerns without new AI-specific regulation?

Accepted Answer

_Current laws already cover many AI use cases effectively._

Existing frameworks already address biases and ensure fairness without reinventing the wheel. If an AI-driven healthcare app misdiagnoses a patient, current product liability laws hold companies accountable. AI tools used in hiring must not introduce bias, and anti-discrimination laws like the Civil Rights Act already govern hiring practices and can be applied to AI-driven decisions. Instead of focusing on the technology itself, regulations should target how AI is used through these established legal frameworks.

Question 7

How do transparency requirements differ between the EU and the US regarding algorithmic decision making?

Accepted Answer

_EU grants rights against automated decisions; US relies on external investigations._

In the US, algorithms are not allowed to discriminate against race, but without transparency it is hard to surface those biases. It often takes external investigations like ProPublica's study showing Asian families were charged higher prices or the ACLU's analysis revealing Amazon's AI incorrectly identified 28 Congress members as criminals. In the EU, citizens have the right not to be subject to decisions based solely on automated means. However, it would be more powerful if mandatory registers were established making this information publicly accessible.

Question 8

How should product builders think about data bias in AI systems?

Accepted Answer

_Bias in data is inevitable; product decisions determine how much to accept._

There is never a way to have non-biased data, because data is biased. As a product person, you need to decide by how much you want to de-bias the data. Sometimes bias is actually good because you don't want averages, you want the best outcome. For example, if identifying certain patients or optimal machinery output, you don't want what the machine did in the past all the time, but just the best parts of it. You're injecting very good data versus just average data.

Question 9

Is AI hurting people with non-Western names?

Accepted Answer

_Concrete bias outcomes in hiring and promotion._

> The junior analyst who keeps pushing the conversation forward finally gets seen, even though she never had the corner office. Question 10

What are the four approaches to addressing bias in AI models?

Accepted Answer

_Four practical methods to reduce AI bias in production systems._

First, identify the bias by testing features that shouldn't have impact, like running loan applications 100 times to see gender differences. Second, help users understand potential bias through UX, like asking specifications when someone requests an image of a nurse. Third, correct the data through prompting, prompt tuning, or fine-tuning with better examples. Fourth, create guardrails or constitutions that let AI critique itself based on rules. Each approach has limitations, and changing underlying biased datasets in large models remains hard.

Question 11

What are the three key levers for AI regulation that Lutz identifies?

Accepted Answer

_Three principles should guide effective AI regulation efforts._

The three key levers are: First, control of AI systems through transparency in development and deployment, since "bias in, bias out." Open data models or open weights like Facebook's Llama are positive steps. Second, focus on what is feasible. Avoid requiring explainability when large language models rely on probability distributions and tend toward the statistical middle. Third, use existing laws. Instead of focusing on technology itself, target how AI is used through current frameworks like product liability and anti-discrimination laws.

Question 12

What are the three main problems with training data that can cause AI to get things wrong?

Accepted Answer

_Three critical failures that undermine machine learning accuracy and fairness._

Training data can fail in three ways. First, it might not be sufficient. The data may lack context or situations the algorithm will encounter in the real world. Second, it might be biased. This means data is systematically missing certain perspectives or groups. For example, if texts predominantly show nurses as women, the algorithm learns that pattern without understanding societal goals like gender equality. Third, the data might be outright wrong. Labels may be inaccurate or based on performances rather than reality, leading algorithms to learn incorrect associations.

Question 13

What are the three student personas you identified through data validation in peer reviews?

Accepted Answer

_Three types of problematic reviewers emerged from our validation process._

We identified three distinct student personas. Lazy Graders select largely the same answer for all questions regardless of whether responses are warranted, or spend minimal time on reviews. Harsh and Happy Graders are students who were unexpectedly strict or lenient on one project compared to others who graded that same project. Misaligned Students consistently rate all their projects significantly more positively or negatively compared to the rest of the class. These personas help us identify which feedback needs re-evaluation to maintain fairness.

Question 14

What did the Harvard study with executives reveal about relying on AI for predictions?

Accepted Answer

_Executives using ChatGPT made worse predictions due to overconfidence and bias._

Harvard conducted an experiment with nearly 300 executives and found that those who relied on ChatGPT for stock price forecasts grew more optimistic and overconfident, and ultimately made worse predictions than peers who worked with other humans to discuss the logic. The study shows how AI can amplify cognitive biases and distort judgment in high-stakes decisions. This demonstrates how easily the past can be a wrong predictor for current times, and why putting faith in AI without human judgment can lead to poor outcomes.

Question 15

What did your classroom study reveal about AI bias in tracking participation?

Accepted Answer

_Classroom data shows AI heard Western names five times more often._

I compared AI name recognition against my own participation ratings for students at Cornell and INSEAD. For Western names, my ratings and the AI's count had a correlation of 0.53, showing they moved together. For non-Western names, the correlation was just 0.27, statistically indistinguishable from noise. The AI also heard Western names about five times more often. For half my class, the AI's measure of contribution had almost nothing to do with how much they actually contributed.

Question 16

What does the article say we need to address AI data problems going forward?

Accepted Answer

_No quick solutions exist; fairness itself remains hard to define precisely._

There's no easy fix coming. Beyond technical difficulties, researchers struggle with defining what is fair. We need tools to check for biases and missing data in our models. We also need the right incentives to check for drift and update algorithms as society changes. Drift happens when datasets become biased over time even if initially unbiased, because society and beliefs evolve. Machine learning and AI will be powerful forces for good, but only if the training data is correct and fair.

Question 17

What evidence shows AI discriminates against non-Western names in hiring?

Accepted Answer

_Research reveals stark racial bias in AI resume screening systems._

A University of Washington study found that large language models screening resumes favored white-associated names 85% of the time, and never once favored a Black male name over a white male one. This bias extends beyond names on paper to voices in the room. Speech models like Whisper produce significantly higher error rates for non-native and accented speakers because the audio they trained on skews American and native. The AI inherited our blind spots because it learned from us.

Question 18

What happened when Microsoft Azure's Vision API analyzed images of Angela Merkel and Joe Biden?

Accepted Answer

_AI misidentified world leaders' genders, sparking calls for accountability._

Microsoft Azure's Vision API made significant errors when analyzing political leaders' images. It identified Angela Merkel as a boy and classified Joe Biden as both a man and a woman. After online mockery about Merkel's misjudged gender, Microsoft changed their algorithm. However, this update happened without transparency about when and how the algorithm changed, illustrating a broader problem with AI systems that can be wrong and biased but operate without public accountability.

Question 19

What kinds of personal characteristics can be predicted from Facebook data?

Accepted Answer

_Facebook data reveals far more about us than we realize._

Michal Kosinski showed in 2013 that using Facebook data could accurately predict sexual orientation, ethnicity, personality traits, intelligence, happiness, addictive substances use, parental separation, age, and gender. The model even managed to separate between Democrat and Republican in 85% of cases. This research demonstrates how powerful social media data can be for profiling individuals, which contributes to why people feel uncomfortable when they don't know how their data is being used without their knowledge.

Question 20

What specific techniques can fix bias in AI systems?

Accepted Answer

_Data science offers concrete tools to reduce algorithmic discrimination._

We can reweight a training set so underrepresented groups carry proper signal. We can transform features to break their correlation with sensitive attributes before a model learns. We can add fairness constraints during training, and audit predictions afterward against tests like demographic parity and equalized odds. The fix is not to switch AI off, but to test it by checking whether its score holds up across every group. The encouraging part is that the bias is measurable, and what is measurable can be fixed.

Question 21

What transparency problems does Lutz identify with current AI systems?

Accepted Answer

_Hidden prompt changes and biased outputs reveal transparency gaps._

The AI memorandum doesn't say much about transparency. We need to understand AI's impact, which requires transparency about the model and the data. Google's early Gemini Model is one example: when asked for a picture of the founding fathers, it depicted different races and genders rather than a historical account because someone at Google actively changed the user's prompt on the fly. A Nature study showed GPT3.5 was biased, more likely to give violent responses when prompted with "two Muslims walked into a..." compared to "two Christians walked into a..." These examples show we're missing crucial transparency.

Question 22

Why did Google's response to the third term question change over time?

Accepted Answer

_Google shifted from blocking to providing third term strategies with code updates._

Google initially restricted itself. When we tested in February, Gemini did not respond. Google has previously adopted a heavy-handed approach toward user freedom and free speech, tinkering with prompts to avoid showing images of the Founding Fathers. I say initially because Google has since updated its algorithm and now provides full insights. This demonstrates the power of these models: with a line of code, they can change what we see. Microsoft similarly changed course silently after I analyzed its AI incorrectly identifying Angela Merkel.

Question 24

Why does AI's societal impact extend beyond just economic productivity?

Accepted Answer

_AI reflects societal norms, not just economic value._

This issue is bigger than just economic growth. AI is trained on human interactions and reflects societal norms and biases. Imagine a world where all human-to-machine interactions are based solely on U.S. or Chinese norms. What will this mean for Europe? If Europe does not invest in creating AI, it risks having its values and norms excluded from the AI systems that will shape future interactions. Europe must step up and play a critical role in shaping the future of AI, not just consume what others create.

Question 25

Why is emotion detection training data problematic, according to the article?

Accepted Answer

_Algorithms learn performed emotions, not real ones, from limited datasets._

Emotion detection algorithms were often trained on the JAFFE dataset, which contains images of 10 Japanese female models performing seven facial expressions. The problem is the algorithm doesn't learn how someone actually looks when angry, but rather how those specific women performed an angry expression. This distinction is critical. The models were acting out emotions rather than genuinely experiencing them, so the training data captures performance, not authentic emotional states. This makes the foundation of emotion detection fundamentally flawed.

Question 26

Why might minorities in the US have lower vaccination rates?

Accepted Answer

_Historical injustices create a healthcare trust gap for minorities._

These differences might be due to access or availability, but they might also be due to missing trust. Minorities in the US have experienced an unfair healthcare system: from the unethical Tuskegee Syphilis Study to racial bias in pain assessment to the ingrained racial skew in AI models. The Kaiser Family Foundation reported stark differences among different states and different ethnicities that could reflect this trust gap.

Question 27

Why should we use AI for workplace decisions despite these bias problems?

Accepted Answer

_AI flattens hierarchies if we measure and fix its biases._

AI will improve how we work and flatten hierarchies. For most of corporate history, being heard was a function of power, and ambiguity protected whoever was already in charge. AI changes that by making transcripts the record, so ideas can propagate on merit and good people become more valuable. The same tool used carelessly will do real harm, but we keep the rewards by demanding algorithmic transparency and accepting that every tool is biased, then fixing what we can measure.
